Fishing Portage Lake
New Leech Lake Campground is just five miles south of Portage Lake. Portage Lake receives relatively little fishing pressure due to its close proximity to the well-known Minnesota fisheries of Leech Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish.
Portage Lake has a naturally reproducing walleye population as well as a stocking program managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Its soft sand bottom, aboundant aquatic plants and a large baitfish population provide excellent habitat for walleyes, northern pike, crappie, bluegill and largemouth bass.
