New Leech Lake Campground is just seven miles from a boat access to Lake Winnibigoshish. Lake Winnie is the fifth largest lake in Minnesota. Lake Winnie covers over 67,000 acres with 141 miles of largely undeveloped shoreline. Lake Winnie is known as one of Minnesota’s best walleye lakes. Fishermen will also find big northern pike, jumbo perch, large sunfish and largemouth bass.

The Mississippi River flows into the west end of Lake Winnibigoshish and out thru the Winnie Dam. The Winnie dam was constructed in 1884 by the Corps of Engineers. The Winnie Dam is the largest reservoir in the Mississippi’s system and controls runoff from a 1,442 square-mile drainage area.

Lake Winnie is an important lake to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as a walleye fish hatchery. The Minnesota DNR encourages people to visit the hatchery and witness their work first-hand. Call (218) 327-4430 to schedule a tour.
